To that I'd sensibly add pretentious and derivative. If it is true that Alkan was a genius, he was totally unlike any other .

indeed, unlike any other.

if alkan is gratuitously aggressive, chopin is gratuitously elegant and poncy

DA KAN just unleashes da fury, he dont give a crap if u cant handle da aggression

i prefer alkan's climaxes FO SHO cos they are simply overblown , pretentios, and WIKID

phildan, you appear to use the word pretentious with a negative connotation - how ironic ;)

Yes, you'll enjoy it here.

I do agree that most anything Hamelin records is great, but I didn't know he played Chopin. Did he record any other Chopin?

he didnt record it, but played it live - and it is ASSUMED that someone bootlegged it

he has recorded the 2nd sonata too apparently

to ask if a pianist play chopin or not is a bit silly, every one does - even gould did!

I can't imagine Hamelin playing the Ballades.. they seem almost, too easy for him. Every time I hear a recording by him, there's usually flying arpeggios, octaves, or any extreme technical difficulty you could imagine. ;) Sure the Ballades are difficult, but they're not the hardest. I'm very curious as to how he played them. Extremely well, I'm assuming. 8)

Yeah I can't either because I always think of Hamelin playing only virtuostic and overly difficult obscure pieces such as rare Liszt pieces and Alkan's music, though I would think he would play the Chopin pieces quite well due to his large technique and musical prowess.

So what label is it on? How do you know it exist? Was it an earlier recording or something?
