Alkan's Symphony for Solo Piano

Postby Comme_le_Vent » 29 Aug 2004, 15:21

DAYUM

this is IMO one of the greatest piano pieces EVER

when i met dre, he said he believes it to be alkan's greatest work

and the UBERINTELLECT(one of the most knowledgable and intellectual musicians ever) - sorabji - said -
one of the most important single works ever written for the instrument. every bar, every harmony is instinct with original feeling and vitally compelling expression, and the mechanical treatment of the instrument is breathtaking'

It's a symphony, but it's for solo piano?
I don't know much about Alkan or his works... Enlighten me, if you will.

op 39 is a set of 12 etudes

etudes 4-7 make up a 4 movement symphony for solo piano

each mvt is in a minor key

it should be listed in the dictionary as the true definition of the word MOFO

If I had the money, I'd buy Dre's recording. I've never heard ANY of Op. 39 played live, and it's killing me.

Eh, bad word choice. By "live" I stupidly meant "non-MIDI." I need to hear a REAL recording of Op. 39, and I suppose Dre's is the best to get.

I had the chance to hear it "live" in a concert and it's amazing! I never knew solo piano can play symphony, it's really very nice. Try and listen to it!
BTW, who has the best recording for this symphony?

yep, i met hamelin, and i told him that the symphony is my favourite work, and that the 1st mvt is probably my favourite piano piece ever, and i said that he plays it better than anyone....he thanked me for my praise.

his recording is literally perfect.

to call this work 'really nice' is an extreme understatement in my eyes, hahaha

I never heard the symphony for solo piano, only the concerto for solo piano. I assume the 'symphony' is just as good as the concerto, and the concerto was quite good, though it was grandiloquent at times. Hamelin's recordings are the undisputed standard for Alkan's music.
