Liszt--the underplayed-overplayed composer?

It's not about Liszt being overplayed for the sake of a pianist showing of his/her technique, it's about acknowledging the musical contributions of a composer. His music is studied so extensively because he could show off (Grand Galop Chromatique), be emotional (Funerailles), tell great stories (Mazeppa), and introduce new playing styles (Beethoven symphony transcriptions)

The 5th PE is seriously my favourite of the set, it's a wonderful piece; so are the others, though LC almost always fails to impress me nowadays (the 6th one strikes me as a much more successful T&V).

I still like LC though, purely because it's so fun to play.

I've listened to Cziffra's LC quite a bit lately and I just love that approach to the piece. It's sooo fresh and exciting. I haven't heard many studio Cziffra recs that exhibit his improvisational talents quite as much as his LC (I mean, unless the rec is OF an actual improv, heh). It's not so much that he "writes" his own little tricks in, but the overall style of his performance is very spontaneous and on the edge without going overboard. That's the only way to play it as far as I'm concerned (I don't buy into the "holier-than-thou" playing in which the pianist plays something slowly and "properly" and with great reverence, even if it IS just a showpiece like LC. Drives me insane. Leave that kind of stuff to Schubert and Beethoven, and even then...)

Self showed self teacher person tha sheet to the PE 5 and she quickly refused the idea of letting self play it as of now

self didnt think it looked hard

but guess she knows what shes doing

People dont like Liszt becuase they think he wrote only really technical peices that many people can't play (so to speak), but its not true, try learning Consolation 3 in Db Major, thats quite easy and as effective as Liebestraum.

As for judging Chopin against Liszt, I sincerely believe Chopin wins, however Liszt wrote many wonderful things and he shouldn't be overlooked as a psychotic priest turned-bad but should be respected for contributing his wonderful melodies to the world and enriching the art of music.

The 5th Pag Etude isn't so difficult...it's not a pushover but it's definatly the easiest of the set.

I think people play Liszt's music a lot because of one main reason. To show off. Liszt's works can be really difficult, and if you play them well, you feel like you are Liszt showing off on stage. Thats a cool feeling.

I think the composer that really makes you FEEL is Chopin.
