Hey JL, check out this link.

Andras Schiff lectures on the Beethoven Sonatas. The lecture about opus 109 is at the top. But don't just listen to that one. If you can find the time, (and I can't think of a better use of a pianist's time!) these talks will open your mind to unseen vistas; personally, my whole concept of the sonatas was altered for the better; I hope yours is too!

About the 109, it's technically difficult and pretty long, IMO, so if you want to play it well, don't procrastinate! Listen to as many recordings as you can get your hands on.

Go for it! :D

Thanks for the clip of Schiff!

well, my teacher and I produced a list of pieces, and I really like them though they kind of were different than what I had in mind. But I love every piece and I'm so excited to work on them.

-Bach Prelude and Fugue in f# minor WTC II
-Beethoven Sonata Op.10 no.3
-Chopin Scherzo no.3 in C-sharp Minor
-Debussy Etude pour les degrés chromatiques
-Rzewski 3rd North American Ballade ("Down by the riverside")

The chopin is amazing, the debussy looks fun, and the rzewski... will just be tough. but hopefully rewarding... lol

Wow, you've got some work ahead of you! I'm sure you'll do fine, though. Please don't forget to post some recordings here as you work on them! ;)

Just remember Archimedes' greatest lesson: you have to "take a bath" from time to time. Don't be a Max Cohen.

Good luck and DO post recordings, pls!!!

Which music colleges/conservatories are you applying to?

Beethoven's op. 109 is overplayed I think. Out of the student recitals I go to here at my college, I hear that one the most. So if you play it, you might risk the chance of not standing out, but of course that goes for any of the popular Beethoven sonatas.
