Who performs Beethoven better?

In my idea Kempff, Brendel, Pollini, Arrau are among the greatest Beethoven interpreters. Also Serkin is a great one, but he breaths too heavily. :roll:

BTW: you might want to include Gilels up there for his fantastic, but unfortunately incomplete set of Sonatas.

I wanted to vote more than once! Arrau is fantastic, the 'thinking mans' approach to them, Richter has immeasurable power in his playing, and Gilels and Pollini are also good.

the best imo are Arrau and Gilels. I also really like the Horowitz recordings of pathetique and Appassionata, i wish he recorded more beethoven.

I can't really give an impartial answer, since I have heard not a large amount for a credible opinion. But from previous experiences of hearing some of these great pianist, and from other member's exaltation: Brendel and Schnabel. These two are legendary for playing Beethoven more than any other composers. I have the complete set of Beethoven sonatas by Goode, and they are extremely good. I would state that he is also one of the best for beethoven's music.

So far I've refrained from answering because I simply can't, as WinterWind put it, provide a credible opinion. I haven't heard at least half of those listed names play ONE Beethoven piece, much less a significant number of sonatas. However, I have heard both Kuerti and Goode (whose complete set I also have) extensively, and of the two I agree primarily with Kuerti's interpretations; so I'll vote A.K.

Though I'd like to give the honourable mention to John O'Conor...not simply because he's Irish but because he has a perfectly subtle touch for a lot of the sonatas! Of course, I can't say I like some of his sonatas because of this introversion.

my first beethoven CD was rubenstien, so everytime i hear pc 4 or 5, I use his playing of those as a guide...

I read Horowitz could play all the sonatas, but never recorded a lot of them.

Actually, Horowitz could play a frigging lot, but he didn't record too much of it;).

Yeah, I read the same thing. I also read his Hammerklavier was way better than, Serkin (Beethoven specialist)
