Well, it was really good, the casting was great, I cant remember the names off by heart but the original actor who plays Papageno had a cold (predictable) and his understudy did it instead. And he was brilliant, I think the star of the opera really...also if you didnt know Glyndebourne are a pretty famous company, they have several DVDs out.

You really had to be there. :p

Heh, I'm obliged to go see an opera after Christmas, and I don't even know what it is. I hope it's not Rossini...

I went to an opera once- on my vacation trip to Germany. It was "Mozarts Die Entführung aus dem Serail" ( I wanted to see Die Zauberflöte, but it was sold out).

Anyway, this opera was preformed in "die komicher opera" (SP?) How should I translate it?" The comic opera [house]."

When I booked the tickets, back home in Sweden, they said "Ehm. You are not going to bring any kids or anything? It is "Die Entürung" with a twist"...

As you may know,the original "entürung" might seem vulgar, this one was even worse. The actors ran around half naked during the ouverture, and right after that, inte first act, after a bloody massacre, the bass-singer-dude runs around naked (after taking a shower) and waves his arms like a bird while singing. Some laughed, other were shocked...

This "madness" which I found very funny kept shocking most of the audience during the non-brake preformance. After a song, during the dialog, some people in the audience just went back home, some shouted "I´m going to watch the rest of the [football] match, instead of this garbage"... Some shouted "This is to vulgar" and others shouted to the actors, who replied.

Well well, the people who stayed, perhaps 90%, gave them standing ovation afterwards.

I've yet to see an opera at all :/

I've only been to one real concert (the rest have all been recitals, although it's only been like 4 anyway).. well.. sort of 2.. but it was just 2 parts of the e-comp (2 performers of the Schubert Round and the Final Gala Night).

I'd love to go see more, especially operas (whether they be vaudevilles or not.. and particularly those of Mozart.. so long as the interpretation is not debasing the work, as in Fryderyk's experience) but I really hardly have time.. and if ever I run into an opportunity in which I even stand a chance in going, it's far too expensive and/or too late (so my parents say..) to 'plan' it all out..

I can't wait for the day though

opera seems so majestic and colorful, and moving and dramatic ~ extremely beautiful (yes, of course, many factors to consider..) ~ I'd like to be part of that some day, whether it be as a member of the audience or actually a performer (I've always wanted to try it out.. I love to sing the classics, and opera, for me, certainly fits into that genre)

I can promise you that being there is a whole new experience...it's 100 times greater than listening. Previously I've seen The Marriage of Figaro which was good, but not as good as this!

Music live is always better, and opera live must be awesome. I'd rather not see an .avi of that opera. Though tomorrow is Rachmaninoff's opera The Miserly Knight on TV, and I AM going to watch that.

My first live concerto was amazing, so much better than any recording I've heard (as in the awe level, maybe the interpretation was less), and opera must be.. dayum.
